The son of singer/actress Edie Adams and photographer Martin Mills, Josh Mills is also the curator of the estate of Edie Adams and the estate of Ernie Kovacs. He is also the executive producer of an excellent new DVD package that will reintroduce you to Take a Good Look, the comedy game show hosted by Ernie Kovacs that has been largely unseen by the public for nearly sixty years.

Take a Good Look
takes the “secret guest” show formula of TV game shows and practically inverts it. For one, it is the host who gives the panel hints about the identity of the secret guest, in the form of sight gags and sketches. For two, none of the clues about the guest or their claim to fame make sense to anyone, unless you’re Ernie Kovacs.

The Library of Congress, which acquired the entire collection of the Ernie Kovacs and Edie Adams in 2015, has digitized, restored and preserved all the material contained in Take a Good Look: The Definitive Collection, the DVD set from Shout! Factory that not only includes all forty-nine episodes—many of which were thought to have been lost or destroyed—but features such eclectic guests and panelists as Carl Reiner, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Mort Sahl, Mary Ann Mobley, Janet Leigh, Jim Backus, Cesar Romero, Ben Alexander, Hans Conried, chess champion Bobby Fischer, former heavyweight boxing champion James Braddock, Dodgers stars Don Drysdale and Larry Sherry, and Ernie’s wife at the time, Edie Adams. We’ll talk about the origins of Take a Good Look, why Ernie was originally reluctant to do the show, the direct line between Take a Good Look and the now iconic specials that Ernie did for ABC in 1961-1962, and more when Josh Mills joins us in our second hour.

If you are among the first 1,000 people to order Take a Good Look: The Definitive Collection directly through Shout! Factory, you will also receive an exclusive bonus disc containing Private Eye, Private Eye, a parody of TV detective shows starring Ernie Kovacs, Edie Adams and Hans Conried that has also remained unseen since it is originally aired in 1961.

This week’s show will also commemorate National Drowsy Driver Awareness Week (Nov. 6-10). Drowsy driving has supplanted drunk driving as a major cause of thousands of fatal car accidents around the world and billions of dollars in damages. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, approximately one out of every fatal car accidents in the U.S. are the result of drowsy driving, while in European nations, drowsy driving accounts for up to 30 percent of all car crashes.

You might recall that earlier this year, we had a chance to talk to Anson Williams, Potsie Weber on Happy Days, and an entrepreneur who has been recognized by the LAPD and the California Senate and Congress as an acknowledged expert on the subject of drowsy driving. Not only that, Anson recently developed a product called Alert Drops to combat the problem of drowsy driving.

Alert Drops is a product that came to Anson indirectly through his uncle, Dr. Henry Heimlich, the man behind the Heimlich Manuever. We’ll replay our conversation with Anson about Alert Drops, and how it carries on the legacy of Dr. Heimlich, at the end of our first hour.

Plus: Tony Figueroa and Donna Allen with a brand new edition of This Week in TV History. It’s a full program as always; we certainly hope you’ll join us.
